A little help choosing

Find a book that feels just right.

Start with what your child enjoys. Then choose a level that gives them room to explore, practise and feel proud of what they create.

Interests first. Age as a starting point.

A birthday does not tell you everything about the right book. Consider what your child likes, what they can do comfortably and whether they want a relaxing activity or a new challenge. Age labels help narrow the choice; a preview page helps you make it.

01 · Spark an interest

Choose something they love

Animals, dinosaurs or space can make a familiar activity feel exciting. Let your child help pick the theme.

02 · Check the challenge

Look inside together

Check the size of the pictures, amount of detail and length of the instructions. For maths, check the topic and example questions rather than relying on age alone.

03 · Make room to enjoy it

Match the moment

A quiet colouring session, a puzzle to solve together and focused number practice call for different books. Choose for the experience you want to share.

A flexible starting point

Choosing by age and confidence

These are suggestions, not milestones. An easier book can be a welcome break, and a harder one can be something to enjoy together.

Ages 2–4

Keep it simple and familiar

Look for big pictures, clear instructions and activities you can enjoy together. For colouring, try large shapes and bold outlines. For future number activities, start with counting familiar objects rather than crowded worksheets.

Ages 4–8

Follow an interest, then build confidence

Choose a favourite theme and an activity with a clear starting point. Mix familiar tasks with a small new challenge, whether that means a more detailed picture, a simple puzzle or practice with numbers they already know.

Ages 8–12

Let them choose the challenge

Offer a choice of subjects and levels of detail. They may enjoy intricate colouring, puzzles with several steps or maths practice on a particular topic. Check a sample page together before choosing.

Different books, different things to look for

Colouring books

Look at outline thickness, picture size and the amount of detail. Simple shapes offer an easy place to begin; detailed scenes give children more to explore. Check that you have materials suited to the pages.

Puzzle and activity books

Check the instructions and try a sample task. Look for variety, a manageable first activity and answers or hints when useful.

Maths books

Choose a specific purpose: exploring numbers, practising a familiar skill or working on a topic they find tricky. Check the number range, worked examples and answer pages. If you need a school match, check the stated curriculum and year group.
